Nanaimo Registered Midwives Privacy Policy

- Purpose
This policy explains how Nanaimo Registered Midwives collects, uses, discloses, and protects your personal information in accordance with British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).
- What Information We Collect
We collect personal and health information needed to provide midwifery care. This may include:
- Name, address, phone, email
- Health history, pregnancy and birth records
- How We Use It
We use your information to:
- Provide you with midwifery care
- Communicate with you
- Comply with regulatory or legal requirements
- Consent
By providing us your personal information, you consent to our collection and use of it for the purposes listed above. You may withdraw consent at any time, subject to legal or contractual limitations.
- Information Storage
All records are stored securely on-site and/or using Canadian-based electronic systems. We do not store your health information outside Canada.
- Access and Correction
You have the right to access your records and request corrections. Please contact us in writing.
- Retention
As required by the Limitation Act (amended in 2013), medical records must be retained for a
minimum period of sixteen years from either the date of the last entry or from the age of majority (19 years of age in British Columbia), whichever is later (i.e. 35 years), except as otherwise required by law
- Safeguards
We use administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your information. These include password-protected systems and locked storage.
- Third-Party Services
We may use third-party service providers for electronic communications or records. These providers are contractually required to maintain privacy standards that comply with PIPA.
